Raise your hand if you’ve straight up Googled “how to be successful”.

I am super guilty, and I bet you are too. You probably found a lot of articles about working hard, waking up early, and doing whatever it takes to climb the ladder and make to success. Or maybe you read ‘The Secret’ (great book, but a little misunderstood) and decided you should start writing down ‘I am rich and successful’ at the top of your Erin Condren planner everyday. Or maybe your Grandmother told you there is no shortcut to success and she walked five miles blah blah blah.

I’m totes sorry to your Granny, but there is a shortcut to success and it’s so simple you’re going to look at me like I’m a psycho. But hear me out – where both the ‘work as hard as you can to get where you want’ and the Law of Attraction ‘thoughts create things’ methods fail, is that they both put you in a constant state of wanting success and trying to get to a place where you feel successful.

Here’s the rub:

Like, if I have a cupcake in my mouth right now, I am not wanting a cupcake. Because I have a cupcake. In my mouth.

I apologize and will work on coming up with more appropriate and less food related analogies but you get my general drift. You can’t both want and have at the same time, it doesn’t make any sense.

When you actively want something or consciously try to get to a different state than you’re already in, you’re creating a constant feeling/reminder of the thing you lack. So – if you’re always thinking about how you’ll one day become successful, or how badly you want to be successful, or keep slaving away at work trying to ‘make it’, you’ll just keep yourself in a state of wanting. And if you’re wanting, you’re not having. Capiche?

Here’s the secret – the biggest and most important secret – to being successful: you need to be completely and truly happy with who you are and what your life is like RIGHT NOW.

Stop focusing on the fact that your bank account is painfully low and you get rich people coffee for a living. Instead, start counting and acknowledging the amazing successes in your life right at this very moment. Feel smart, feel wealthy, feel like a badass girlboss who’s already on the path to changing the world and making a million dollars.

Blogger Erin Lane's Top Tip For Success

It’s super simple: like attracts like. If you’re always wanting or trying, you’ll attract more wanting and trying. If you’re psyched on who you are, what you’ve done so far, and where you’re going – you’ll attract back even more elements in your life to be excited about and grateful for.

Real girlbosses feel successful throughout the process and keep looking for opportunities to be grateful, inspired, and confident – start trying it out by racking up the small successes in your life everyday, and acting like the boss bitch you already are. Of course there are bigger and better things ahead, but in order to be a success, you must begin to feel like huge, massive, sweet success right now and continue to feel that way on your road to wherever you’re heading.

  2. I completely agree! Sometimes it’s hard to not get caught up in the idea that success involves recognition, and at times, approval from others. Three things that make me feel successful are family, dancing, and writing.

    1. Totally agree – looking for recognition & approval gets us stuck in a place that’s hard to get out of – you can’t make everyone happy! It’s also just unrealistic because everyone has a different idea of success to begin with. I love writing too (it’s my zen space), but I’m super jealous you can dance. I’m possibly the worst dancer in the world but I love it anyway. Jazz hands all the way.
