If you’re ready to give up, that means you’ve already taken a very important step – you’ve made the leap, taken a risk, done something big! To feel like giving up means you have to have started something already, which is HUGE. It’s also the most important thing to remember when you get to a point that makes you feel like throwing in the towel; at some point in time you wanted to do this, you wanted to make something happen.

All of us, without fail, feel like quitting sometimes. Success, career, and life can be hard, but definitely worth doing. Don’t beat yourself up for wanting to quit. It’s fine and it’s totally normal to get frustrated, beaten down, and just so over everything. When you feel like giving up, here are 5 things to consider to keep you on track:

1. You Made The Choice To Start In The First Place

Hopefully you started this whole thing because it was something you were passionate about. Just because you love something and want to do something doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. Actually, it’s usually the opposite. Passion definitely fuels drive, but it doesn’t automatically smooth out the bumps in the road. Think back to the reasons you started – get them down on paper, mull them over. Use those reasons to find a little spark that will inspire you to find that passion again.

2. Your Brain Tries To Trick You Into Quitting (Seriously)

Brains are weird. Brains get locked onto certain ways of thinking and specific patterns (that’s why it’s so hard to break a habit). It’s seriously almost painful for your brain to break out of it’s typical pattern or way of being and do something new, which leaves us struggling to break out of a start then quit cycle. The only way to re-wire your brain is to push past the discomfort over and over again until you build new pathways. It’s obnoxious, and it’s not fun, but it’s the only way to outsmart your brain. Feeling stressed or uncomfortable is often just a sign that you’re about to reach a breakthrough!

3. You Might Be Breaking Off More Than You Can Chew, But That’s Fixable

While pushing past discomfort is key, sometimes we really are just overloaded. I’m a serial ‘yes girl’ and I can’t even tell you how many freaking times I’ve ended up spread way too thin to get anything really accomplished and feel like I’m going crazy. A lot of us blogger/entrepreneur/solopreneur/career climber types tend to have this thing called “being really shitty at asking for help”. We want to feel like we can do it all, which sometimes we can, but sometimes you just need to bring in a little bit of help to free you up to focus on the more important things. Hiring a super talented, passionate team member to help out with certain parts of my business was one of the best decisions I ever made, and gave me back much needed time and energy to get back into the swing of things with some serious drive. 4. It’s Not Just You!

When you feel like quitting or you’re so stressed it feels like your brain is literally going to explode, it can often feel like you’re the only one going through that. Remembering that you’re sharing that feeling with a TON of other people in the same boat can provide a little comfort – the road to success is a team effort, baby! Reaching out on social media, the comment section of relevant blogs, and reading other people’s similar stories can give you a much needed sense of community and a place to vent your feelings where other people can actually relate. My main mission when starting Sweet Success was to create a community of like minded women who can support each other, lend advice, be sounding boards, and go on this wild ride together.

5. Success Is A Journey, Not A Destination

Being goal oriented is badass, but when you’re really focused on an end result, occasionally the road there can start feeling a little…rough. Remember that the most important part of cultivating success is feeling happy and successful now, even during the crappy parts. That doesn’t mean you should love everything all the time, it just means you shouldn’t focus too much on getting somewhere, and instead focus on what you’re doing right now that lights you up. It sounds so cliche, but success honestly is a journey, not a destination. It can get crazy frustrating when it feels like you’re not reaching your goals, but it’s a hell of a lot more enjoyable to put your attention on the things that are in your immediate control and use those as tools to make you feel successful now – no matter where you are on the journey.

Don’t give up, sister! Well – unless you are deciding to give up something in your life that doesn’t bring you joy (key example: I just quit one of my freelance gigs that was ultimately just causing me loads of stress) but that’s a whole different thing. Don’t quit your daydream, don’t quit your passion project! The going will get tough – that’s inevitable – but you have everything you need to make your dreams a reality.
